The Faroe Islands are growing in popularity, and getting more and more visitors. To keep up with this interest, there are new things to see and do, and new places to stay.
NEW ACTIVITIES AND TOURS
Sandoy Island Visit: Previously only accessible by boat, travelers can now explore Sandoy Island thanks to the new Sandoy Sub Sea Tunnel. This island is known for its cliffs, villages, lakes, and hiking trails. Whether you are interested in cultivation, stonework, cycling, enjoying traditional meals in local homes, hiking, or fishing, Sandoy is worth a visit.
Beer Tour in the capital Torshavn: For beer lovers, there’s a new Torshavn BeerWalk. This guided tour lets you taste local craft beers while you learn interesting facts about the city and the Faroe Islands. The tour includes tastings at the Mikkeller bar and OY brewery, and you get to keep your tasting glass as a souvenir.
Selfie Challenge in Torshavn: If you’re looking for a fun and educational team-building activity, try the Torshavn Selfie Tour created by the 62°N team. Divided into small teams, each with their own local guide, you’ll compete against each other to complete the selfie missions. The team with the most points wins a Faroese gift each.
New Agritourism Options: Eight new tourism projects focused on agriculture and farming have been introduced. You can visit a farm on Svínoy Island to learn about peat cutting and haymaking, help with sheep feeding and shearing on a farm in Selatrað village, or take a barley and beer tour by the Múlafossur waterfall. There’s also a home dining experience and tour on Nólsoy Island, and a knitting class in Torshavn where you can enjoy snacks, learn about the history of wool and how to knit, and take home a knitting kit.
MORE HOTEL CHOICES
Tórshavn: Nordic Hotels & Resorts (and parent company Strawberry) recently added the 4-star Hotel Føroyar to their portfolio of unique destination hotels. With 200 rooms, the hotel is situated on the hill above Tórshavn, with an amazing view to Nólsoy Island. The spa will be fully completed with a steam bath, stone bath, sauna, rooftop pool, ice bath and outdoor jacuzzi by the end of 2024.
Vágar Island: Nature lovers can look forward to the reopening of Hotel Vágar in April 2024. This hotel has been completely updated and will have 25 rooms, a restaurant, and meeting rooms. It’s close to many natural attractions on Vágar Island, including the Múlafossur waterfall, Drangarnir stone formations, Tindhólmur islet, Mykines puffin island, and the Trælanípa cliffs.
Klaksvík: The first 4-star hotel outside of Torshavn is scheduled to open in December 2025. Hotel Bisk will be in Klaksvík in the north, near beautiful tall mountains and attractions such as the Christian’s Church, Kallur Lighthouse, and Kunoy Park. The hotel will have 81 rooms, a restaurant, and a conference room with capacity for 300 people.
NEW MEETING SPACES
A new multi-hall arena called Við Tjarnir will open in February 2025 allowing the Faroe Islands to cater for larger conferences, sports events and concerts for the first time! With 3 floors, it will be over 8,000 square meters in size.
The new Faer Isles Distillery visitor center also offers a great meeting space. A central part of the decor are the 16 handcrafted wooden tables made by local craftsman, Joel Cole. Constructed as a puzzle, they can be moved around to fit different meeting styles, and are also height adjustable. Visitors can even combine their meeting with a whisky tour and tasting.
With new experiences and places to stay, the Faroe Islands are a great destination to visit. Start planning your trip with local DMC, 62°N, today!
