Located 185km northeast of Blantyre, Liwonde National Park is renowned for its diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes. It’s a remarkable sanctuary with the Big Five (Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Rhinoceros and Buffalo) and abundant bird and antelope species. Boat safaris along the Shire River provide unique, up-close encounters with elephants, hippos and more.
Popular overnight safari: Majete Wildlife Reserve
80km southwest of Blantyre, the Majete Wildlife Reserve offers remarkable wildlife experiences and successful conservation efforts. The reserve has reintroduced the Big Five and boasts diverse landscapes, including riverine forests and open savannahs. Day 1 – Arrival in Blantyre
Arrive at Chileka International Airport and meet your Orbis guide. Blantyre, at an altitude of around 1000 metres, has a wonderful climate with warm days and cool evenings. The city is surrounded by mountains, which provide a stunning backdrop to this bustling city.
Accommodation at Game Haven Lodge within the beautiful 500-acre Chimwenya Game Park, one of Malawi’s last remaining indigenous forests. There are two conference halls in this tranquil environment, making it an ideal setting for both business and leisure travellers. An array of wildlife means guests can see antelopes (Eland, Sable, Nyala, Waterbuck and Impala) along with giraffe and zebra.
Day 2 & 3 – Majete Wildlife Reserve
Travel by road to Majete Wildlife Reserve and arrive in time for lunch. Majete has an abundance of wildlife. Get ready to encounter the Big Five as well as Waterbuck, Bushbuck, Eland, Hartebeest, Zebra, Bush Pigs, Impala, Nyala and Sable. Enjoy your safari experiences on a boat or game drive.

Day 4 & 5 – Liwonde National Park
Travel to Liwonde National Park, arriving for lunch at Mvuu Camp. Mvuu Camp is an excellent choice for those seeking the ultimate bush experience in a comfortable and relaxed setting. Situated at a spectacular vantage point on the banks of the iconic Shire River, Mvuu Camp offers a front-row seat to observe the diverse and thriving wildlife of Liwonde. Covering an impressive 580 sq. kilometers, the park is home to over 400 bird species and features a dense population of hippos, crocodiles and large numbers of elephants, along with a variety of antelope species. There are also frequent sightings of lions, cheetahs and servals, as well as occasional glimpses of the elusive Black Rhino. You’ll have the chance to embark on a boat safari, walking safari and game drive, each providing unique perspectives of the diverse wildlife and pristine natural surroundings.

Day 6 – Cape Maclear
After breakfast, head out to Cape Maclear and Pumulani Lodge. Nestled in the lush hills amidst a tapestry of trees and craggy outcrops, Pumulani Lodge offers a tranquil and secluded retreat on the southern end of Lake Malawi.
