• Cruise the floating gardens of Xochimilco, built by the Aztecs to grow their food.
  Explore its labyrinth of small islands and canals on board a typical “trajinera” barge, while enjoying typical Mexican food and a shot of tequila.
• Shop till you drop at San Juan Market.
  This is THE place to buy high-end ingredients such as nopal (cactus), huitlacoche (corn fungus), mosquito eggs and iguana meat. Crunchy grasshoppers, anyone?
• Art cycle tour along the narrow colonial-era streets of Coyoacan, where iconic Frida Kahlo was born, lived most of her life and died. Her home, the “Casa Azul”, showcases her unique art and paintings.

Must eat: Tacos Al Pastor – you will fall in love with them! They are the result of one culture colliding with another. In the early 1900s, Lebanese immigrants brought with them their famous technique of spit-roasted meat. When adopted locally, the meat (mainly pork) was marinated in dried chilies, spices, and pineapple, and then served on small Mexican tortillas with onions and cilantro. A must-have!

Best nightlife: Chilangos, as Mexico City dwellers are known, love bar culture and their city is awash with options, from rooftop bars, old cantinas and basement jazz clubs in the historic city centre, to laid-back watering holes with skilled mixologists and live music in the modern and hip La Condesa and La Roma neighbourhoods.

Best time to visit: Average temperatures vary little (between 20°C and 25°C), so Mexico City is a great place to visit all year round.

Top tip: Wonderful festival activities incorporating Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) traditions can be organized in November. According to popular belief, the dead have divine permission to visit friends and relatives on earth once a year on November 2nd.
