For a big sandy desert, the scenery is remarkably varied, with the giant red dunes of Sossusvlei being the most famous. Because of how old it is, the Namib is home to numerous species that don\u2019t occur elsewhere and although no humans live in the desert, an amazing array of flora and fauna survives here. Famous species include the Welwitschia \u2013 a living fossil plant, endemic chameleons, fur seals along the coast, brown hyenas, jackals and remarkably one of Africa\u2019s largest antelope &#8211; the Gemsbok.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sesriem<\/strong> &#8211; 2 nights &#8211; <em>Stay at Dead Valley Lodge\/<\/em><em>Hoodia Desert Lodge<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As there is no accommodation at Sossusvlei, visitors to this desert wilderness stay at Sesriem, 65 kilometres away, where camps and lodges serve as a base from which to explore the dunes. Sesriem Canyon, a deep chasm carved through the rocks by water, is a striking natural feature of the area that is best explored on foot. Stony walls rise up sharply on both sides of the canyon, while birds roost in its crags and lizards dart along the ledges. The canyon\u2019s name was coined when early settlers used it as a water source, using six lengths of leather (\u2018ses riem \u2013 six thongs) tied together to lower buckets into the water at the base of canyon.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Walvis Bay<\/strong> \u2013 1 night &#8211; <em>Stay at Pelican Point Lodge<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Walvis Bay (\u2018Whale Bay\u2019) is a thriving town, Namibia\u2019s principal harbour and one of the country\u2019s most popular tourist centres.
